How Do You Achieve Your Goals?

Is it the start of a new year or perhaps you have an overwhelming wave of inspiration? It’s time to really make things happen and this time nothing is going to get in your way right? But being able to achieve your goals requires a little more than just mojo.

So what’s different?

Haven’t you done this before? Didn’t you make the same commitments last year, last month or even last week? If so why do you think this time will be different? My mother used to always say to me ‘If you continue to do what you have always done then you will continue to get the same results’ and in my experience she was right (thanks mum I should have listened to that one sooner). Without approaching issues from a different perspective the likelihood of achieving your goals is close to nil. In fact they may actually make things worse by destroying your confidence and ambition and the downward spiral begins.

So how can you achieve your goals for real this time?

  • Create reasonable goals
  • Expecting to change the world overnight is just not realistic, nor will losing 15 kilos in a week (in a healthy way). Making your practice successful overnight is exactly the same. Setting reasonable goals is the first step to creating successful outcomes. Take on too much and you will feel a failure everyday when you wake up. Not the way either of us want to start our day right?
  • Choose the right number of goals
  • Having 10 goals means your energy for each of those goals is 1 tenth of your average output meaning it will take you 10 times as long to achieve any of them and your focus will likely be scattered. Write down as many goals as you like but prioritise no more than 3. This way your focus is refined, you can put more energy and focus into each of your goals leading to greater potential for success.
  • Once you have achieved them then move onto the next 3.
  • Adjust and adapt
  • If you are not getting results then stop, take a breath and look at what the obstacles are. Create solutions and keep trying. Failure occurs only when someone gives up. Success occurs when we keep getting up, dusting ourselves off and keep on truckin’.
  • Celebrate your wins
  • Taking the time out each week to look at what you have achieved will help keep you motivated to continue your quest. Nothing motivates you better than success so take the time to pat yourself on the back for your wins. Consider a reward system to help motivate and celebrate
  • Make time
  • It’s great to have goals but if you don’t create some space to work on them they will just become another list on a piece of paper. Create a weekly schedule for your goals and mark off your achievements each day. If you have a day where you stumble don’t give up. As long as you are taking steps forward overall you are on your way to achieving what you want. Check out our time management tips.
  • Who’s on your team?
  • Having a support crew is something that will keep you going if you have a rough patch and they will cheer you on when you are kicking goals. After 20 years in practice I still have a support crew. It doesn’t matter where you are on your journey they still matter. Find people and resources that continue to keep you motivated and encourage you to achieve your goals and create your long term success.
